TinyPNG vs Squoosh vs fileo Compress — an honest split
I used TinyPNG for years. I still tell people to keep the WordPress plugin if they already live in that CMS. This page exists because that workflow uploads files and then meters them. That is a business, not a crime. It is also not what I want for a folder of unreleased hardware.
TinyPNG
Best automatic one-click look for PNG logos and a lot of JPEGs. Free tier caps (images per session, megabytes per file) exist because their CPUs are not free. API is excellent. Privacy is “trust Tinify’s deletion policy.” If that sentence bothers you, do not use it for client previews.
Squoosh
Best picture-by-picture control: MozJPEG, AVIF, side-by-side, local. Worst batch story: one image, fiddly. When a single LCP hero is worth twenty minutes, I use Squoosh. When I have a directory, I do not.
fileo Compress
Local like Squoosh, batch like the sites that upload. Encoder is the browser, so we will lose laboratory shoot-outs against MozJPEG. We win the afternoon you need twenty SKUs, a ZIP, and no drop on someone else’s bucket. We also write like a workshop, not a coupon site, because that is the product.
Use TinyPNG when a plugin already sits on the server. Use Squoosh when you are arguing about one picture. Use this when the files should never take a trip.
What none of us should pretend
No web compressor restores a smashed WhatsApp forward. No web compressor replaces a designer who exports at the right pixel size. Rankings for the words “image compressor” are dominated by brands that spent a decade collecting links. We are building a product people can verify. If that also ranks, good. If it does not, you still have a local batch tool, which TinyPNG’s free tier is not.
